Guidelines for First Person Essays
What it is: First Person is a column in Minnesota, the University of Minnesota Alumni Association magazine, that features personal essays written by alumni, faculty, students, or anyone with a University connection.
What we want: Essays that give captivating accounts of personal experiences; fresh ideas and new perspectives; and rich detail and strong storytelling quality. Topics may be serious, light, or humorous and on just about any subject. We encourage essays that show that the writer was changed by the described experience or reached an epiphany through it. Essays need not be about the University of Minnesota, but the writers must have a U connection.
What we don't want: Opinion pieces commonly found in newspaper Op-Ed pages; advice or how-to articles; accounts of other people's personal experiences; or responses to other stories that have run in Minnesota.
How to submit an essay: Writers interested in submitting an essay for First Person should begin by sending a draft or a short synopsis of a proposed essay to Shelly Fling, Editor, Minnesota Magazine, McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St. SE, Suite 200, Minneapolis, MN 55455. Or send it by e-mail to fling003@umn.edu. If the editors are interested in the essay idea, they will contact the writer and proceed with an assignment.
The process: Once a completed essay is submitted, the editors may return it to the author with comments and suggestions for a rewrite. The revised piece will be edited for style and may undergo minor editorial changes. The author will have the opportunity to review any changes before it is published.
Length: 1,200 to 1,500 words
Payment and rights: Payment is negotiated upon assignment and is made upon acceptance. Payment is for first North American rights.
